TSMC China Chip Plant Gets Technology Upgrade

Taiwan’s government has approved an application by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC) to upgrade technology at its chip plant in Shanghai, helping the world’s top contract chipmaker tap growing technology demand in China.

TSMC will be allowed to use 0.13-micron process technology to make chips at its eight-inch wafer plant in Shanghai, upgrading from 0.18-micron technology. The smaller circuitry allows for the design of more powerful chips for more complex devices. Squeezing more circuits onto a single chip also increases chip yield per wafer, boosting efficiency.
