So far this year, the cycle has been up: Many semiconductor companies, such as Intel, have seen record earnings as the economy has recovered from the worst of the recession. Driving the semis: Strong demand for consumer electronics, particularly smartphones. “A lot of these technology purchases, such as new computers and phones, have become necessities,” says Ryan Jacob, manager of the Jacob Internet fund.

Applied Materials, Inc. recently celebrated the 20th year of its Applied Endura platform, the most successful metallization system in the history of the semiconductor industry. Solar Semiconductor, Inc. and Conex Energy, Inc. have announced the agreement to develop over 300 MW of solar opportunities at various locations in California and Ontario, Canada. The solar opportunities will make use of Solar Semiconductor’s photovoltaic solar panels and related equipment in both ground-mounted and rooftop applications. In addition, under the terms of the agreement, the two companies will work together to develop solar opportunities in selected international locations.

Pure-play semiconductor foundries are expected to do even better in 2010 than originally forecast thanks to resurgent demand for consumer electronics products, according to a new report from iSuppli. The industry researcher this week raised its revenue forecast for contract semiconductor manufacturers to $29.8 billion, a 42.3 percent increase over 2009’s 22.1 billion.

Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced that its Fab 4 manufacturing facility in Bloomington, Minnesota has been accredited by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) as a Category 1A ‘Trusted Foundry.’ The accreditation applies to design, wafer foundry, and test operations, and expands Cypress’s ability to make and sell defense products in the fab by authorizing fabrication of material for classified and unclassified programs requiring Trusted Suppliers.

Global semiconductor sales climbed 4.5 percent in May from the previous month helped by higher demand for chips used in computers and mobile phones, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.Total sales advanced to $24.7 billion in May from $23.6 billion in April, the San Jose, California-based association said in a Business Wire statement today. Sales from a year earlier jumped 48 percent, it said.
