Raleigh Tops for Quality of Life

Raleigh can’t match the cultural splendors of New York, the financial clout of Chicago, or the ethnic diversity of Los Angeles. But it does have plenty of attractive qualities of its own.

Such as its high-tech industries, which have established Raleigh as an anchor of the famed Research Triangle. Then there are its high-profile universities, led by North Carolina State, which have cemented its reputation as an educational center. And its status as a state capital, which has brought political prominence and economic stability.

And now you can add this: Raleigh is the major metropolitan market that offers the best quality of life in the United States.  Raleigh earned first place, edging out two metros that are substantially larger, No. 2 Washington and No. 3 Minneapolis-St. Paul.

M+W Americas acquires 100 percent of NSTAR Global Services

The global engineering and construction company M+W Group (formerly M+W Zander) strengthens its position in the high tech services business. Today the company announced that its subsidiary, M+W Americas, Inc. purchased 100 percent of NSTAR Global Services.

Raleigh big population winner, Buffalo big loser

Raleigh has made the most impressive climb since 2000 in the population rankings of metropolitan areas, according to estimates released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

North Carolina’s Raleigh-Cary metro, which ranked 59th in 2000, is 49th in the new standings. Its rise of 10 places in nine years is the biggest gain registered by any metro in the current top 50.

NSTAR Global Services, a technical services and staffing provider specializing in semiconductor, manufacturing, and capital equipment industries, has been named the Top Growth Company of fourth quarter 2009 by the Entrex Private Company Index, a benchmarking index that tracks the revenue growth of private companies in North America.

BusinessWeek Magazine cites Clayton for schools, affordability

Clayton, North Carolina ranks among the best locales nationwide for its combination of good schools and affordable housing, according to BusinessWeek.

The magazine worked with real estate portal Cyberhomes to identify the 25 most affordable ZIP codes in the U.S. with the best public schools. The top-ranked places have relatively low home values compared with the closest metro area and at least three schools with good standardized test scores.

Clayton placed 10th on the BusinessWeek list, which included Riverwood Elementary School, East Clayton Elementary School and Riverwood Middle School among its top schools. The town’s median home price of $167,900 is lower than the $204,000 median price in the Raleigh-Cary metro area.
